Chapter Nine

Dinner ended, but Ryan didn’t take Victoria to the next location. He took her back to his house instead. Confused, she asked, “Did you forget something?”

“No.”

“Then what are we doing here? Did you change your mind about dancing?” Was he cutting the date short so he could get her into bed sooner?

“I haven’t changed my mind about anything.”

“Do you have something sneaky planned?”

“Maybe.”

No maybe about it. He was taking her on a detour. They exited the truck and went into the house.

He led her through the back door, and the moment they stepped onto the patio, she gave a little gasp. He’d decorated with strings of twinkling lights, paper lanterns, and gold and white balloons, creating an idyllic setting. On the table, amid sparkling confetti and a tall white candle, were two crystal flutes.

“The champagne is in the fridge,” he said. “We wouldn’t have had champagne at our real prom, not legally anyway, but I figured we could have it now.” He indicated the stereo he’d set up. “I downloaded a bunch of music from our era, slow songs and ballads to keep it romantic.”

“Did you do all of this when I was at the mall?”

He nodded. “It seemed like an easy enough surprise because I figured you wouldn’t have any reason to come outside after you got back. Plus, I went crazy trying to find a fancy place for us to go dancing around here, and then it hit me that I should just create our own place. Our own prom, here at home.”

“This is beautiful. Thank you.” She leaned forward to hug him.

He wrapped her in his arms, and they held each other. He sought her lips, and they kissed with warmth and tenderness. She deepened the exchange, and he reacted, tugging her tighter against him. She welcomed the dizzying heat, the feel-good pressure of his body aligning with hers.

After they separated, they caught their breaths in lung-expanding unison.

“Should we have the champagne now?” he asked.

She nodded. She wanted to celebrate their affair, to throw caution to the wind, to enjoy every wild romantic minute of it.

Ryan went inside to get the bottle. He returned with the cork already popped. He filled the flutes and handed her one. “To the girl from my past.”

She clanked his glass with her own, and the crystal chimed. “And the boy from mine.”

While they sipped, they looked into each other’s eyes.

“No one has ever done anything this special for me before,” she said.

“No one ever hurt you the way I did, either.”

“You’re helping me heal from that.” And making love with him tonight was going to be part of her therapy. When this was over, she intended to go home with a newfound sense of calm and confidence.

He leaned in to kiss her again, and she sighed. By next week, it would be over. But for now, she was part of his world: the renovated farmhouse, the animals in his care, the woods with its looming shadows and enchanted beauty.

She said, “I wonder if they’re watching us.
